The United Nations Development Program and Shell has launched an $18 million, five-year initiative to promote development in Niger Delta. The partnership was announced by Basil Omiyi, who heads the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria, during a two-day forum on the development of the oil-and-gas-rich region. The program will help curb poverty by strengthening local governance, empowering women and children, and protecting the environment. Omiyi said: “While we recognize the enormous potential of this partnership with respect to moving the regional development process forward, we are also aware of the fact that our achievement would be grossly limited without the active support of other stakeholders.”
