The United States on Monday announced a series of new commitments to help deter migration from northern Central America by investing in infrastructure, good governance, workforce development, and labor rights.
The White House has dubbed the initiative the “next chapter” of the Root Causes Strategy, released in July 2021, which focused on how to prevent people from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras, known as the Northern Triangle, from migrating to the U.S. without authorization. The so-called Central America Forward is a series of commitments from the U.S. government to “complement and support” investments from the private sector.
It includes efforts from the U.S. Agency for International Development, which will train youth in skills demanded by the private sector, and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, which will finance private-sector-led projects in areas “where financing can have the highest development and migration reduction impacts.”
