Watch: Funding insights — 5 years of climate funding

In this webinar, Devex analysts explore climate-related, bilateral ODA funding flows — highlighting trends in recipient locations, funding volume, sectors of funding, and prominent projects.

    By Devex Editor // 21 February 2020
As 2030 approaches, we have reached a critical point for global cooperation in the fight against climate change. Climate change has become a crosscutting issue in global development — among energy, agriculture, and urbanization programs and with increasing relevance to interventions and policies for education, health, and mobility, among others. To explore funding flows related to climate change, the Devex Analytics team parsed five years of OECD bilateral ODA funding from 85,000 projects, totaling approximately $177 billion. Building off of this interactive climate funding analysis, Devex convened a webinar exploring the data in-depth — highlighting trends in recipient locations, funding volume, sectors of funding, and prominent projects. The webinar also featured a deeper analysis of how climate and gender integrate, the state of climate funding to small island developing states, and which important subsectors within the overarching “climate change” label are not receiving much attention from funders. A few questions and key insights covered during this webinar: • How will climate funding progress in the future? Climate funding is on the rise — since 2002, it has risen more than five times, starting at $7.7 billion and eventually coming to $40.1 billion. • Which donors contribute the most to climate as a share of their overall ODA? Japan led the race in bilateral funding for 2017, followed by Germany and EU institutions. • What are some of the reasons behind the high figures? India was the top recipient of climate funding for 2017. • What are the main limitations and risks when analyzing the data? The database features hundreds of thousands of rows of climate funding data. With a Devex focus on climate funding: • The conversation around gender data has taken on an urgent tone in the past five years. We look at some key insights into integrating gender into climate funding data. • Small island developing states are building climate resilience — we look at the main findings. Speaker: Maja Wisenberger, senior development analyst, Devex Analytics Moderator: Raquel Alcega, associate director, Devex Analytics Have follow-up questions? Send them to analysts@devex.com.
