Global health practitioners around the world are constantly involved in a struggle to ensure access to health care.
Part of that struggle has involved pushing pharmaceutical companies to expand access to their products. But it’s also vital that those products are delivered in ways that meet the needs of patients.
The decades-long HIV response can provide some examples on how to expand access to medicines, said Angeli Achrekar, deputy executive director of programs at UNAIDS, during a Devex event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting this week in New York City. Some 75% of all people living with HIV and AIDS — nearly 31 million people — have access to lifesaving medication, she said.
