Who are the largest INGOs in the US? And where do they get funding?

INGOs in the U.S. had a total income of more than $28 billion, according to their most recent filings. But who got the money, and which organization topped the list?

By David Ainsworth, Miguel Antonio Tamonan // 26 July 2024
The 50 largest international nongovernmental organizations in the United States received annual funding worth more than $28.1 billion according to their most recent tax filings, compiled in an exclusive new report by Devex, published this week. Those figures make them cumulatively comparable to all but the largest international donors Devex research found that the largest U.S. INGOs increased their funding by 2.4% more than inflation, growing roughly in line with the rest of the U.S. economy. The single largest INGO was Direct Relief, which retained top spot in the list for the second year in a row, albeit with a slightly reduced income of $2.27 billion compared to $2.31 billion the year before. The list of the 10 largest organizations remained largely unchanged, with only two new entries, MAP International and CARE USA, who had occupied positions 11 and 12 in the rankings the previous year. The fastest riser was World Central Kitchen, the NGO set up by celebrity chef José Andrés, which saw its income rise from $138.1 million to $570.5 million, catapulting it 42 places up the list to make it the 15th largest NGO in the U.S. As in the previous year, the largest source of funds for the organizations on the list was donations, chiefly from the public and foundations, with government in second place. It is not possible to measure how much the public gave to INGOs, compared to foundations, however across all nonprofits, the public gave roughly three times as much.
