    Who's who in #globaldev: October 2019 appointments

    The International Monetary Fund has a new chief and EBRD has a new general counsel.

    MANILA — Kristalina Georgieva officially took office as the new managing director of the International Monetary Fund on Oct. 1. The Bulgarian economist is the first head of IMF to come from an emerging market economy. She is also the second woman to take on the job after Christine Lagarde, who resigned in July after being nominated and eventually confirmed by European Union leaders as the next president of the European Central Bank. Before taking on the IMF post, Georgieva served as CEO and interim president of the World Bank. She also previously served as vice president for budget and human resources at the European Commission and commissioner for international cooperation, humanitarian aid, and crisis response. World Bank Axel van Trotsenburg, who’s been acting as World Bank CEO since Sept. 2, is the bank’s new managing director of operations. van Trotsenburg has held senior positions at the bank, including as vice president of development finance where he was responsible for the replenishment and stewardship of the International Development Association, the bank’s funding window for countries with lowest incomes. European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Michael Strauss is the new general counsel of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. He starts in the role in 2020. Strauss was a partner at Washington law firm Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis, and previously served as legal counsel of IMF and senior counsel at the World Bank’s Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency. CARE Australia CARE Australia has a new CEO: Peter Walton, who is currently serving as director international at the Australian Red Cross. Walton will start in his new role in Jan. 2020. CDC Group CDC, the U.K. development finance institution, has appointed Andrew Brown as deputy chief investment officer and managing director. Brown will be responsible for chairing the institution’s investment committees for funds and capital partnerships and will sit on the direct equity investment committee, according to a news release. Brown held senior positions at private equity firms Société Générale Asset Management Alternative Investments and Amundi. Before taking on the job at CDC, he was chief investment officer at Emerging Capital Partners, a private equity firm focused on Africa. United Nations U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres made several appointments this October that include: • Helen Meagher La Lime of the U.S., special representative for Haiti and head of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti. • Fatoumata Ndiaye of Senegal, under-secretary-general for internal oversight services. • Maria do Valle Ribeiro of Ireland, U.N. resident coordinator for Zimbabwe. • Philippe Poinsot of France, U.N. resident coordinator for Côte d’Ivoire. • Zia Choudhury of Bangladesh, U.N. resident coordinator for Botswana. • Ola Almgren of Sweden, U.N. resident coordinator in Myanmar. Planned Parenthood Planned Parenthood Global has a new executive director: Monica Kerrigan, currently vice president for innovations and technical leadership at Jhpiego, an international health nonprofit. She’s a “fierce leader” in sexual and reproductive health and rights, according to her profile on Planned Parenthood’s website. At Jhpiego, she leads a “multidisciplinary team to identify novel solutions and harness the power of innovations to address challenges in sexual and reproductive health including adolescent health, HIV/AIDs and maternal health.” DAI Keith Smith has taken on a new role at DAI as senior vice president of its HMG business unit, which is focused on delivering and implementing U.K. aid and investments. Prior, he was the unit’s commercial director. The Power of Nutrition The Power of Nutrition, an independent charitable foundation based in the U.K., has named Keith Hansen as its first president in the U.S. Hansen is expected to help the organization expand its presence, especially in the lead up to the Nutrition for Growth Summit in 2020 in Japan, according to a news release. ADB Institute The Asian Development Bank Institute will have a new dean come April 2020. Tetsushi Sonobe will be taking over the role, succeeding Naoyuki Yoshino, who’s been in the position since 2014. Sonobe is currently a professor at and vice president of the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Tokyo. International Rescue Committee Jeannie Annan is now chief research and innovation officer of Airbel Impact Lab, the International Rescue Committee’s research and innovation arm that she co-founded. She’s been leading research at IRC for a decade, according to a news release.
