That number may be lower compared with figures relating to some of the leading causes of death worldwide, like AIDS, but with suicide, there’s more than meets the eye.
In the Indian state of Maharashtra, where suicide deaths reached 16,622 last year, according to data published by the National Crime Records Bureau. There are many families that refuse to report suicides to the police, some due to stigma and others out of shock following the death of a love one, according to Jyotsna Bahirat, program coordinator for Connecting NGO, a local nonprofit working on suicide prevention.
