With various global emergencies forcibly displacing over 89 million people by the end of last year, the number and types of roles to support the global refugee crisis have grown to meet this demand.
UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency, was already one of the top employers for entry-level positions on Devex’s job board last year, accounting for 42% of the U.N. agencies’ total postings. This is up from 16% in 2019. UNHCR also came fourth overall among the top 10 employers featured on Devex’s job board, with a total of 3,635 jobs posted during 2021.
Running for over seven decades, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established in 1950 by the U.N.’s General Assembly to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. However, the evolving socioeconomic context and growing need for interdisciplinary action have led the agency to recruit a broader range of positions outside of the human rights and humanitarian aid sectors.
