World Bank unveils new Ethiopia aid strategy

The World Bank has a new Country Assistance Strategy for Ethiopia, which would run from June 2008 to June 2011. “Ethiopia’s achievements on growth and basic service delivery are remarkable. At the same time, sustaining this good performance will require addressing several looming challenges. The bank will provide its full support to Ethiopia in this regard,” World Bank Country Director Ken Ohashi said. For fiscal 2008, Ethiopia is due to receive USD635 million but funding for the remaining years will hinge on donations that the International Development Association will secure under its 15th replenishment. In addition, the World Bank announced it will release USD29 million to reduce land degradation in the African nation and USD30 million to help the government implement the National Nutrition Strategy and the Health Extension Program.
