Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh remains defiant against calls for his immediate resignation, insisting that he will only step down when his current term ends in 2013. Saleh’s most recent declaration of this intention to complete his term follows a proposal by a regional group of Gulf states for a transition of power from Saleh to his deputy. The initiative, which did specify when the transfer of power is to occur, was welcomed by Saleh but rejected by protesters, who called the plan’s offers of immunity to Saleh and his family as unjust, the Guardian says.
