Agros is a non-profit organization that enables rural poor families in Central America and Mexico to escape the cycle of poverty by purchasing their own land. Agros extends land loans to purchase farmland and partners with families in applying sustainable agricultural practices. Taking a holistic and sustainable approach to development, Agros works to restore the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual brokenness of the people we serve. Agros is an organization that desires to follow the teachings of Jesus by serving the rural poor, regardless of their faith. The families repay the loan for capital costs (land, homes, irrigation systems) over a 7-10 year period. Agros’ model is innovative in its two-fold objective: 1) to enable participants to become an organized community of independent landowners who are actively involved in the decision making that affects their lives and 2) to enable Agros to use repaid loans to fund new villages. The ability to own land gives the rural poor a means to support their families, changing an uncertain future into one of great promise.
Since 1982, Agros has helped thousands of families build new lives for themselves by facilitating land ownership and providing technical assistance, training, capital loans, village infrastructure and volunteer service teams to support the work and vision of community members.
Agros’ holistic development strategy includes:
-Community Organization
-Land Ownership
-Housing & Infrastructure
-Sustainable Economic Growth
-Community Education & Training
Over more than two decades Agros has successfully forged strategic alliances and partnerships with a variety of national and international development organizations. These alliances, along with the Agros international and U.S. staff, ensure a strong commitment to the accountability and success of Agros’ villages.
All international Agros staff members are native to their respective countries and understand the cultural nuances of the communities with which they work. Agros’ genuine commitment to providing hope and opportunity to the rural poor through private land reform has earned the trust of the people we serve.
