The purpose of the Bangladesh Technical Education Board is to conduct and control examinations and award certificates to the graduates of technical and vocational institutions.

In 1960 the Directorate of Technical Education was established for the development of technical and vocational education. The Directorate of Technical Education initiated rapid development and expansion works of degree, diploma, and trade level technical education in the country.
