Departing from the concerns and threats that are happening, especially in Papua and West Papua, a group of young people was moved to do something. There are 20 young people who are committed to saving the land of Papua from the destruction of its environment and social life. They formed a non-profit organization, Bentara Papua.
The young people consist of activists who have long experience in social and environmental work. They have various backgrounds. However, most of them are graduates from universities in Papua with various disciplines. Some come from fisheries and marine science, socio-economics and communication. They have also been advocating since 2005 and have continued to develop a volunteer membership to support Bentara Papua.
By law, Bentara Papua has registered before a notary in Manokwari, West Papua on April 13, 2012. Activists and volunteers of Bentara Papua provide community assistance to raise early awareness of environmental issues. Bentara is based in Manokwari which has what is called PaCE (Papua Center of Excellence). The aim, among others, is to produce young leaders for sustainable development in Papua.
