Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF)
About

Everyday, vulnerable people are being stripped of their right to land, freedom and their identity, victims of the environmental destruction inflicted on their shared planet.

Driven by their core values of integrity, innovation and impact, EJF uses investigations and film to uncover these environmental and human rights abuses, giving a voice to the voiceless. They work for environmental justice; to protect the natural environment and the people and wildlife that depend upon it. Environmental security is a basic human right, and they go to the ends of the earth to defend people and planet.

From the cotton fields of Uzbekistan to the coastal waters of West Africa, EJF is working in some of the world’s toughest and most remote countries to shine an international spotlight on the environmental and human rights abuses that too often go unnoticed.

By looking at environmental security through a human rights lens, they can mobilise concern, garner support and drive international action for lasting change.

PROTECTING PEOPLE AND PLANET

Dynamic, nimble and effective, the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is working to secure a world where natural habitats and environments can sustain, and be sustained by, the communities that depend upon them for their basic needs and livelihoods.

SECURING LASTING CHANGE FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET

At EJF’s core is a simple but powerful belief: people all depend on the natural environment for their livelihoods and well-being, and that environmental security is a basic human right.

A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF FILMING & ACTIVISM

Films and photographs can and do change the world. They use video, along with new technologies, to document threats to environmental security and human rights.

TURNING LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL FIGHTS GLOBAL

Their dedicated team of researchers and campaigners works across the globe, in some of the world’s toughest and most remote countries to shine an international spotlight on the environmental and human rights abuses that too often go under the radar.

Founded by Steve Trent and Juliette Williams in the UK in 2000, EJF currently has 30 members of staff, with teams in Cote d'Ivoire, Germany, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, South Korea, Spain, Thailand and the UK; their programmes operate across the European Union, Asia and West Africa and as well as in the USA and at a global level.

EJF’s campaigns run across four key areas: oceans, climate, pesticides and cotton.

Oceans - EJF is working to protect the oceans, end pirate fishing and stamp out the human rights abuses driven by this illicit activity. By doing so we aim to protect the millions of people that depend on our oceans and for the magnificent and varied wildlife that call them home.

Climate - EJF believes climate change is both an environmental and human rights issue, and their Climate Campaign aims to secure international protection for the world’s growing population of climate refugees. Alongside this, they must all do what they can to reduce their footprint on the planet - EJF supports an end to the carbon addiction and for the adoption of truly innovative approaches to global energy needs.

Pesticides - Pesticide use is contributing to the decline of vital insect pollinators which are crucial to food production and way of life. EJF’s Pesticides Campaign aims to eradicate the use of toxic pesticides and their harmful effects on people and wildlife.

Cotton - Since 2004, EJF has worked to raise awareness of the environmental and human rights abuses in the global cotton industry.

MISSION

EJF believes environmental security is a human right.

VISION

Their vision is for a world where natural habitats and environments can sustain and be sustained by the communities that depend upon them for their basic needs and livelihoods.

EJF strives to:

  • - Protect the natural environment and the people and wildlife that depend upon it by linking environmental security, human rights and social need.
  • - Create and implement solutions where they are needed most – training local people and communities who are directly affected to investigate, expose and combat environmental degradation and associated human rights abuses.
  • - Provide training in the latest video technologies, research and advocacy skills to document both the problems and solutions, working through the media to create public and political platforms for constructive change.
  • - Raise international awareness of the issues their partners are working locally to resolve.
