BOTSWANA YWCA is a non-profit making membership organization that seeks to empower women and youth founded on Christian principles. The name Young Women Christian Association embraces specific principles, which express a philosophy of life. Each of the four words in the name express a principle.
YOUNG: requires that each member should strive to acquire and live by attributes that express the core meaning of youth, namely: Honesty, Love for others, energy and vitality.
WOMEN: expresses the realization and endorsement that women are the core of society. Each member of this association (both full as well as associate members) and staff who may not necessarily be members of the organization, are required to subscribe practically to the empowerment of women as a strategy to empower society.
CHRISTIAN: requires that members and all those associated with the work of the organization should emulate Christ’s way of life.
ASSOCIATION: express the requirement that members must form themselves into a well directed team that has a clear vision and mission that are understood and practically expressed through each member’s way of life.
Association means therefore, to work together as a TEAM.
The Association has six regions (South, South Central, South West, North Central, and North East and North West) with twenty five active branches out of 40 branches. The membership has dropped from 3000 to about 500 attributed to the declining spirit of voluntarism and the changing societal expectations.
