The Office carries out the competence of the state in the following areas

• technical standardization
• metrology
• testing
• harmonization of technical regulations

Responsibilities of the Office are stipulated by the Act No. 20/1993 Coll. on Safeguarding the Organisation of the State Administration in the Field of Technical Standardization, Metrology and Testing, the Act No. 22/1997 Coll. on Technical Requirements for Products, the Act No. 505/1990 Coll. on Metrology. The responsibilities further arise from relevant resolutions of the Government and international treaties by which the Czech Republic is bound.
