Etermar Engenharia e Construcao SA

COMPANY'S HISTORY Etermar was founded in 1968 by Engineer Pedro Barreto, a visionary with extraordinary technical expertise, and began its activities by constructing an 11-floor residential building in the city center of Setúbal. In 1970, applying its founding engineers’ experience in port works, the company began operating in the marine segment. Since then, Etermar has participated in Portugal’s most demanding marine works.   In 1985, the company was a pioneer in Portugal in disclosing and building the first submarine outfalls: Carvoeiro (1989), Baleeira (1989), Sagres (1990), and Espinho (1992). During this period, it also designed and built Portugal’s first Artificial Reefs along Algarve’s coast (1990). As of 1997, it carried out various agricultural hydraulic projects. In this new sector of irrigated farmland, it designed and implemented innovative projects in Trás-os-Montes and at Alqueva, with emphasis on irrigation networks, zoned embankment dams, trapezoidal channels and hydraulic tunnels. In the late 90s, the company began to operate in cableway transport by building the first cableways on the island of Madeira: Rocha do Navio Cableway (1998) and the Funchal Cableway (2000). A solid management model, competent technical staff, and its own fleet of marine equipment were the necessary ingredients for the company's internationalization in 2006. In 2006, it won its first international tenders, of which we highlight the sea outfalls of Tangier and Tetouan in Morocco and construction of the first quay in Equatorial Guinea. Next, the company built the Port of Oran and the seawater intakes for the Fouka desalination plant in Algeria. In 2008, Etermar’s turnover abroad had already surpassed its turnover in Portugal. In 2010, the emphasis goes to the share capital increase, from 15 to 25 million euros, through the incorporation of reserves, enabling the company to improve its financial ratios and competitiveness in the international market. The success in projects carried out in very different countries and cultures, as in the case of Algeria, Brazil, Cape Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Malta, Morocco, Dominican Republic or Tunisia, show that the commitment to personnel training, adapting the management of various sectors to new requirements, and very selective investment in equipment adjusted to new needs, were undoubtedly key factors which today make Etermar an international company of recognised expertise.
