Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Sao Paulo (FMUSP)

The Universidade de São Paulo Medical School is recognized for its pioneering and excellence in teaching and research. It was founded in 1912 and established in 1913. In 1931, the current building of the medical school was formally opened. In 1934, it became part of the Universidade de São Paulo. FMUSP offers 4 undergraduate courses: Medicine, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, and Occupational Therapy. FMUSP campus is located in Pinheiros and occupies a total area of 44,000 m². The Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy and Occupational Therapy courses are based on the Universidade de São Paulo campus in an area of 6,000 m². FMUSP has 1,400 undergraduate students, more than 1,000 employees, including 374 professors, 1,800 graduate students and 1,600 residents. It has 27 graduate programs (Masters and PHD), 62 medical residency programs, 14 specialized and multidisciplinary residency programs. An average of 1,300 new scientific articles are published each year. The Hospital das Clínicas (HC) is part of São Paulo Medical School, and it is the largest hospital in Latin America. More than 1,5 million outpatient visits per year, more than 250,000 emergency room visits per year, more than 50,000 surgeries per year. The Hospital das Clínicas has 8 specialized institutes (Central Institute, Psychiatry Institute, Heart Institute, Radiology Institute, Cancer Institute, Children and Adolescent’s Institute, Orthopedics and Traumatology Institute, Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation), the Auxiliary Hospital of Suzano and the Future Alcohol and Drugs Institute. FMUSP has one of the largest scientific medical research centers in the country, with 62 medical research laboratories (LIMs), 230 research groups developing intellectual production in several areas. FMUSP also works in partnership with the University Hospital (HU). The Center Health School Butantã is a health and social care teaching unit of FMUSP, specialized in primary health care. FMUSP is internationally recognized for its excellence in teaching built on a tradition of more than 100 years. In 2015, FMUSP launched its first edition of the Winter Schools attracting medical students from 18 different countries. FMUSP is dedicated to promoting and developing excellence in teaching and research.
