The Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya is the pioneer institute responsible for higher education in Agriculture in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest, largest and the most dynamic Faculty of Agriculture in the country. The Faculty presently offers three degree programs which are of 4-year duration: B.Sc. Agricultural Technology & Management (39B), B.Sc. Food Science & Technology (35B) and B.Sc. Animal Science & Fisheries (89B). The total annual student intake to the Faculty through the UGC is 300.
The Faculty also accommodates for special provision and foreign students. All the academic programs offered by the Faculty are designed according to a semester-based course unit system. The medium of instruction at the Faculty is English.
The Faculty, at present consists of eight departments of studies. To support the academic programs as well as the outreach activities, the Faculty has established Agriculture Education Unit, Agriculture Bio-technology Centre, Agribusiness Centre and Teaching Methods Unit. The Faculty is capable of providing a sound practical training in Agriculture through its Livestock Farm at Mawela, Udaperadeniya, Meewathura Farm at Peradeniya, Experimental Station at Dodangolla and Sub-campus at Mahailluppallama. The latter offers practical training in agriculture during one whole semester including community based learning.
To ensure the high quality of the training offered by the Faculty, the Faculty is equipped with 119 permanent academic staff and 250 academic support staff. The Faculty has a strong academic staff with 89 members holding Ph.D.s from world famous leading universities, of which about 50 % are full Professors.
