Folke Bernadotte Academy
The Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) is the Swedish government agency for peace, security and development.
FBA supports international peace operations and international development cooperation. The agency conducts training, research and method development in order to strengthen peacebuilding and statebuilding in conflict and post-conflict countries. They also recruit civilian personnel and expertise for peace operations and election observation missions led by the EU, UN and OSCE. The agency is named after Count Folke Bernadotte, the first UN mediator.
Some 100 people work at the FBA in Sweden at its offices in Stockholm and Sandö.
The agency consists of three departments:
-Department for Missions, Elections and Deployment (MED)
-Department for Peace Operations, Leadership and Gender (PLG)
-Department for Prevention, Peacebuilding and Governance (PPG)
These are supported by an administrative department covering finance, record-keeping, archiving, reporting, planning, coordination, security, human resources, communications, management support and IT.
The FBA is led by a Director-General. Sven-Eric Söder was appointed Director-General of the agency in 2012 and continues in that post. Jonas Alberoth is Deputy Director-General.
The management is supported by a directorate and a government-appointed advisory council.
History of Folke Bernadotte
Count Folke Bernadotte was the UN's first official mediator and tragically was its first peace representative to be assassinated as a direct consequence of his work.
A member of the Swedish royal family and nephew of the King, Folke Bernadotte was a military man with a deep commitment to basic human values. As Vice-Chairman of the Swedish Red Cross during the final months of the Second World War he successfully negotiated with the Nazi regime in Germany to secure the release of 15,000 concentration camp prisoners who were transported to Sweden. The now-legendary White Buses Operation remains a proud episode in Swedish history which has inspired the country in its commitment to playing a growing role in humanitarian and peace operations.
In May 1948 Folke Bernadotte became the UN's first official mediator and succeeded in achieving a truce in the first Israeli-Arab war, laying the groundwork for both the UN Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA). On 17 September 1948, a few days before his second plan for a political solution was to be presented to the UN, Folke Bernadotte was assassinated in Jerusalem by extremists.
The Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA) is named after Folke Bernadotte, an organization that represents Sweden's expressed dedication to international peace and security.See more
