ABOUT
The Pro Nature Fund (PRONATURA), which was created on January 17, 1990, was incorporated as a private non-profit organization by Executive Power Decree No. 77-90 of February 28, 1990. It began its operations with the administration from a donation from the Puerto Rico Conservation Trust, with which she executed four forestry projects or “green projects” with the assistance of The Nature Conservancy (TNC), whose experience enabled her to play a decisive role in raising resources and investment in environmental assets.
It was the first organization created as an umbrella or non-governmental network, of the natural resources and environment sector of the Dominican Republic, achieving in its first decade of operation, incorporating numerous non-governmental and governmental organizations to the work processes of the projects executed in the entire national geography, optimizing the use of resources from various international sources.
From 1993 to 2002, it was the host institution for the Small Grants Program of the Global Environment Fund (PPS / GEF) and the United Nations Development Program. It was for a long time the Focal Point of the civil society organizations of the Convention on Desertification and Drought and of Consultation of the Earth Charter. Since 2006, associated with TNC, it has been working on conservation projects in protected areas and with a greater presence in the Valle Nuevo National Park. Since 2009, it has been running the Less CO 2 Programfor the exchange of carbon emissions by planting trees and since 2010 is an executing partner of the Program for Environmental Protection sponsored by the North American Agency for International Development (USAID), as well as the biodiversity conservation projects in the hotspot of the Caribbean under the auspices of the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF).
PRONATURA's experience includes watershed conservation projects, resource inventory, soil conservation practices, reforestation, use of timber resources, national park management plans, ecological restoration, community organization, training, environmental education radio programs, research for the conservation of biodiversity. The PRONATURA work practice emphasizes the participation of communities as relevant actors for environmental protection and the sustainability of natural resources.
