It is the only Central American university education center dedicated to the training of teachers for all levels of education. Created as a Higher School for Teachers in 1956, it became the current UPNFM in 1989 and is the second state university chronologically and quantitatively speaking. It offers twenty-three majors with various orientations at the undergraduate level, as well as thirteen master's degrees and a doctorate in education at its graduate level. Member of the Central American Higher University Council (CSUCA), the OUI and other international entities, the UPNFM has established agreements with universities in Germany, Spain, the United States of America, Taiwan, Mexico, Chile, Cuba and others.
