Freedom From Hunger
About

Freedom from Hunger is a supporting organization of Grameen Foundation. When their two organizations joined forces in October 2016, core operating functions, programs and staff of Freedom from Hunger were integrated into Grameen Foundation. At the same time, Freedom from Hunger continues to operate as a charitable organization and a supporting organization of Grameen Foundation, guiding projects across the world to give women the tools they need to end poverty and hunger for themselves and their families.

Their approach combines the power of partnerships, digital technology, and self-help solutions.

To achieve lasting change, they collaborate with local partners: companies, non-governmental organizations, government agencies and others that share a common interest in developing, delivering and sustaining innovative solutions to poverty and hunger.

Their solutions always promote self-help, and because children are most vulnerable to the ravages of poverty and malnutrition, they focus on women—their primary caretakers. They equip women to succeed at the very thing they are already determined to do—feed and educate their children, improve their family’s health, and create positive change in their communities.

Their programs strive to harness the unprecedented opportunities offered by technology, especially digital technology, to accelerate progress in the fight against poverty and hunger.

Mission

Enable the poor, especially women, to create a world without hunger and poverty.

What they do:

Microfinance is a powerful self-help support tool that allows the very poor to reduce the day-to-day uncertainties of cash management. Whether it is saving money or gaining access to credit, vital needs can be met and opportunities pursued.

But financial services alone are not enough to help the very poor climb out of poverty. Freedom from Hunger has developed and promoted “value-added" or “integrated" microfinance programs that pair financial services with education and health protection.

Their education programs engage women at their microfinance group meetings—to promote better health, nutrition, business and money management. Using dialogue, story, song, demonstrations and pictures, women with little or no schooling learn practical skills to build futures of health, hope and dignity.

Financial Inclusion

They use self-help groups as a platform for providing women and youth with knowledge and access to financial services that together, help them manage a healthier future.

Health

Their integrated, health focused programs are delivered through financial service providers and include health providers. The combined service gives women knowledge, access to health service, and financial means to keep their families healthy.

Linking Agriculture, Nutrition and Gender

Linking nutrition, agriculture, gender equality and financial services into programs allows them to address the complex relationships that exist between gender inequality, food security, and low economic empowerment.

Curriculum Design and Training

They have distinctive expertise in training design and delivery for a range of audiences, from senior executives at financial services organizations to field staff, to semi-literate self-help group members.

Research and Publications

Their research puts their programs and impacts to the test. It ensures that the value we set out to deliver is supported by evidence from the field.
