Indonesia Heritage Foundation (IHF) or Yayasan Warisan Nilai Luhur Indonesia, is a nonprofit organization founded by Dr. Ratna Megawangi and Dr. Sofyan Djalil in June 2000. It was legally formalized by the public notary in September 2001 No. 578/ANP/2001. An update in the law meant that it was further legalized by the Department of Justice and Human Rights No. 12 in August, 31, 2007.
IHF was established in response to the question, “Why, when the majority of Indonesian people already know about the moral and religious teachings (Pancasila and Religious teachings) is good moral behavior not more fully reflected in the everyday behavior of the community? The rise in student brawls, conflict between groups (ethnic, religious, and ideological), high levels of corruption, environmental damage, and other social problems, are examples of a discontinuity between what is known (moral knowing) and what they do (moral action). As well as failing to build good character, Indonesian education has not succeeded in inspiring creative thinkers who use higher order thinking skills. They recognize that a creative economy for the 21st century requires a creative workforce.
IHF are delighted to announce that the mission to build “A Nation of Good Character” is making new breakthroughs in ways to inspire the upcoming citizens with good character. They promote consistency between the mind, heart, and actions; “habits of the mind”, “habits of the heart”, and “habits of the hands”. They use a process of continual assessment, a positive approach to character development, and ‘The 9 Pillars of Character Education’. They have developed innovative educational strategies and teach positive parenting skills to prepare the next generation to be citizens of integrity who are also positive learners using creative thinking and higher order thinking skills.
The founding school is based in Cimanggis on the outskirts of Jakarta. It is here that the professional teachers have developed the teaching models and curriculum, including the Character Based Holistic Education approach. Initially the kindergarten, Elementary and High School were together in one location, but expansion means they now have a separate High School location. Most classes have a main teacher alongside an assistant teacher to promote greater professional sharing and learning. This also gives us flexibility as they provide programmes to outside agencies. They have onsite facilities to accommodate and train teachers from across Indonesia.
In the last 15 years, IHF has developed the following approaches and run numerous programs, including:
