About

The Indonesian Association of Women with Disabilities (HWDI) is a women's organization whose administrators and members are predominantly women with various kinds of disabilities (physical, sensory, mental, intellectual), established on September 9, 1997 in Jakarta, under the name Indonesian Association of Women with Disabilities (HWPCI) , HWDI was born as a result of global demands for the protection and empowerment of women with disabilities who experience layered discrimination.

In 1995, UN ESCAP held a training Seminar for Women With Disabilities ( WWD ) in Bangkok, Thailand. In 1997, in Washington DC USA, an International Leadership Forum meeting for women with disabilities was held which was attended by 614 women with disabilities from 82 countries around the world.

The Indonesian delegation who attended the International Leadership Forum and the Indonesian National Council for Social Welfare (DNIKS) facilitated the establishment of a Women's Committee which was supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs, the State Ministry for Women's Role (UPW) and the National Secretary of International Rehabilitation (NSRI).

After holding several meetings, 10 Wapenca leaders and 5 women who were observers of disability issues succeeded in forming a format which then formed the HWDI management on September 9, 1997 at the DNIKS building.
