About

InformAction is a unique human rights organization that uses film and community discussions to get ordinary people to speak out and take action. They operate through mobile field teams – using a car, screen, projector and camera - to show films to thousands of ordinary people through-out Kenya every week. Experienced activists and facilitators lead community discussions on justice and governance, while video journalists film the discussions and record human rights abuses.

Since 2010, InformAction (IFA) has empowered hundreds of thousands of Kenyans in rural and marginalized areas, profiling the demands for change through innovative media and action. It has focused on impunity, governance, and justice for victims of political violence.

In an environment that has become increasingly difficult for civil society and free expression, they use their unique methodology to by-pass control, corruption, and censorship. They reach out to all communities and classes with understanding and information.

Make change with them at InformAction; Watch, Discuss and Act!

Vision

An informed and empowered society that speaks truth to power and demands accountability and social justice.

Mission

To inform and empower communities in Kenya in order to catalyze public debate and action for a just and accountable society.

InformAction is currently active across 33 counties in Kenya, which cover the following regions: Central; South Rift Valley; North Rift Valley; Kisumu; Kisii; Northern Kenya; North Eastern Kenya; and Coastal Regions.

WHAT THEY DO:

FILMS

InformAction (IFA) has it's own unique genre of activist films, designed to provoke thought, talk and action. These films are screened every week throughout Kenya, to specialized audiences and at international film festivals. They use the highest journalistic ethics and standards to make engaging documentaries and features - and tell it from the point of view of the marginalized and mistreated. Their field-trained local video journalists are the community eyes-and-ears on the ground, capturing the stories and struggles so often missed or ignored.

DEBATE AND DISTRIBUTION

In villages and small settlements, they distribute thousands of DVD copies of the films in markets, residential areas, cafes, and video shops. IFA activists and facilitators show the films and lead audiences in debating and airing their grievances on camera. People are then encouraged to form Community Action Teams (CAT), to put pressure on local and national leaders to be responsive and accountable. They interchange the films and views between different communities to help increase understanding and empathy and reduce conflict.

RESEARCH AND DOCUMENTATION

Everything is captured on film, archived and transcribed. It is a unique data bank, and a rich base for research, analysis and IFA products - it informs everything they do. Documenting the experiences of people - especially victims and survivors of political violence – is also an important step towards justice and empowerment. SOCIAL MEDIA is used to reach out and expose their films and findings to everyone who needs to know.
