Instituto De Defesa Do Direito De Defesa is a non-governmental organization, recognized by the Brazilian Department of Justice as a public-interest non-governmental organization (OSCIP).
IDDD’s work promotes the preservation and expansion of the right to defense, guaranteeing those accused of crimes the same opportunities to present their version of the facts as granted to the accuser, so that they can work toward a more just and humanitarian judgment.
Work continues inside the prisons through inclusive cultural projects that use art to sensitize those who are not aware of the harsh reality faced by those deprived of their liberty.
Whether pleading for defendants who are not financially able to assume the costs of their defense without jeopardizing their or their family’s sustenance (free legal assistance), or engaging in constant dialogue with both the federal and state governments (judicial, executive and legislative branches) or with the media and opinion makers, or promoting educational and cultural projects, IDDD seeks to make the right to defense legally effective and to foment a culture of greater tolerance, with the hops of building a more harmonious and peaceful society and effective democracy.
IDDD’s projects seek to put due legal process into effect, ensuring quality defense for all accused, in the belief that this is one of the most effective forms of breaking the “prison-streets-prison” cycle.
