About

Keeping It Real (KIR) Foundation was established and registered in Nigeria in 2010 as a Non-Governmental Organization (RC 916541). KIR Foundation exists to transform the lives of vulnerable children, youth, persons with disabilities, prison inmates, women and our local communities through Education, Advocacy, Capacity and Sustainable Development.

Keeping It Real (KIR) Foundation, since 2012 has been working with the Special Needs School located in Creek Road in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. In February 2013, KIR Foundation started an annual Prize Giving/ Book Donation Day to celebrate and inspire the students. Also in March 2013, they commenced vocational Training at the Special Needs School, so far 66 students have been taught 15 different skills. The projects were initiated when they discovered that the students were not being taught the standard subjects because they lacked teachers and motivation to learn; they were taught only 5 (five) subjects as opposed to the 13 (Thirteen) subjects their counterparts in regular schools learn. The students have great potentials; however they are grossly marginalized because of their disability. During their research, they discovered that most of the students end up doing menial jobs or begging after secondary school and very few of the students end up in higher institutions.

Consequently, to reduce the poor performance of the students with disabilities in their national examinations, KIR Foundation begins an After-school Academic and Values Education Initiative at the Special Needs School for the entire month of March 2015. The aim of the initiative which falls under Educational Quality Improvement Projects (EQUIP) is to give additional academic support to the students of the selected class arm of S.S 3. The objective of the initiative is to aid in the preparation towards the Senior Secondary 3 final examinations beginning in April/May 2015. The After-school Academic and Values Education Initiative will also teach study skills, values, ethics and its curricula will be tied the West African Examination Council (WAEC) and Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) syllabus. The expected outcome is at least 70% pass for the students in the examinations to secure admissions into various tertiary institutions.
