About

Established in 1983, starting with only two rooms and four staffs, including Dr. S.P. Dhital as only a doctor within Government Hospital (Bhim Hospital) premises, today Lumbini Eye Institute (LEI) has evolved from a small eye clinic to one of the leading and most successful eye care center among several eye hospitals run under Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh in Nepal. It is also considered as one of the finest example of self-sustainable eye care facility in entire South Asia.

The Institute boasts a cadre of adequate experienced ophthalmologists and has a good back –up of paramedical staffs. 215 bedded this hospital serves more than 550 OPD patients and perform, 75 to 170 different types of eye surgeries daily.

In order to share the expertise & experiences and for the transfer of skill, LEI is building institutional linkages in countries like Tibet, Cambodia, etc.

LEI Objectives

The primary objectives of LEI is to provide high quality and high volume eye care services in affordable form to the rural population through multi pronged approaches. Germinating from this broad objective, LEI have following sub-set of objectives:

- To develop LEI as a centre of excellence for advance referral with multi-specialty services.
- To develop Lumbini Eye Institute (LEI) as a centre of excellence of producing qualitative high ophthalmic manpower as well as center of community ophthalmology, offering various training for the community at large.
- To contribute in the achievement of national self-reliance in eye health care.
