The Ministry of Agriculture is the State institution responsible for promoting, guiding and coordinating the agricultural and forestry activity of the country.

According to the decree law 294 of 1960, "its action will be aimed, fundamentally, to obtain the increase of the national production, the conservation, protection and increase of the renewable natural resources and the improvement of the nutritional conditions of the people".

History 

The Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Colonization was created in 1924, through DL No. 43. Among other functions, it was assigned the protection of agricultural industries, regulation of hunting and fishing, control of the guaniferous deposits, promotion of agricultural credit and everything related to the branch of Colonization.

Later, in 1927, with Decree No. 7,912, its name was changed to the Ministry of Public Works, whose duties included those related to the government of the agricultural sector.

Finally, on August 1, 1930, the Ministry of the Interior issued Decree No. 3,524, which created the Ministry of Agriculture, which, since then, acted as an independent State Secretariat, based on the Department of Agriculture of the Ministry of development. This new portfolio was assigned as a mission to promote the development and promotion of agricultural production and the teaching of agriculture.
