Bengal Civil Supply Department was established in British India in order to deal with the severe famine caused by undivided Bengal and supply of food items during World War II. This department introduced statutory rationing system in the major cities: quickly expanded the rationing system. The adverse effect was noticed when the Civil Supply Department was abolished in the 5th of India after the partition. In order to deal with the situation, the food department was started in the civil supply system under the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
