Established on October 22, 1976 under the Punjab Development of Cities Act, Multan Development Authority (MDA) is a successor body of Multan Improvement Trust (MIT), that was established in 1944 under Punjab Town Improvement Act, 1922. The scope of MIT was limited to residential and commercial schemes located in municipal boundaries which was then called city area. MDA's area of jurisdiction spreads over 560 km² covering almost all important establishments like Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Pak Arab Fertilizers and Industrial Estate, and others. The prime responsibility of MDA is to evolve policies and programs relating to launch new housing schemes, residential development of the city and important engineering projects. MDA has been launching a number of developmental projects especially in housing sector consisting of more than 30,000 plots of various sizes and utility.
Multan Development Authority has staffed many skilled personnel from different disciplines. The Urban Development Wing of MDA is administratively divided into six directorates i.e. Directorate of Town Planning; Directorate of Engineering; Directorate of Estate and Land Management; Directorate of Finance and Administration; Directorate of Urban Planning; and Directorate of Traffic and Transportation Planning having an overall strength of 635 employees.
Vision
MDA strives to be an accountable and people-friendly principal planning and development vehicle of the Multan, aiming at providing and continuously improving metropolis-vide development works, facilities and services of acceptable standards to all. MDA attempts to turn Multan into an "attainable city" with combined support of people, private sector and different level of the Government, where overwhelming majority enjoys convenient, healthful and satisfied living.
It further seeks to enable Multan to position itself to meet the challenges of the future and to seize opportunities in an effective, efficient, equitable and sustainable manner making special efforts on challenges triggered by rapidly growing population, ever increasing demands, needs for institutional adjustments and forces of changes within and without.
