New Millennium Hope Development Organization (NMHDO)
New Millennium Hope Development Organization /NMHDO/ is an indigenous, non-profit making and non-governmental development organization established in 2007 and started its operation in Addis Ababa in 2007. It has now re-registered and licensed by the ministry of justice, Charities and Societies Agency as an Ethiopian Resident Charity in accordance with the new charities and societies proclamation NO.621/2009 by registration NO.0539.
The organization has so far implemented more than twenty one (21) projects addressing poor and marginal women, disadvantaged girls and OVCs and other different projects with a total beneficiary of over 60,000 people in Addis Ababa, Tigray, and Gambela regional states and the City Administration of Addis Ababa.
NMHDO aspires to see an Ethiopian society in which the needs and aspirations of orphans and vulnerable children, girls and women’s are fulfilled in sustainable manner.
NMHDO exists to ensure about Orphans and vulnerable children , destitute girls and women’s, persons with disabilities especially women’s with disabilities have access to basic services through working closely with communities, local administrations, community based organizations (CBOs) non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders.
NMHDO has good presence in Tigray people regional state and is a recognized partner to Axum and Laelay Maychew District offices of agriculture, cooperative promotion, Women and children affairs, Education, Health and finance and economic development.
NMHDO works in collaboration with various governmental and non-governmental organizations and is an active member of: Consortium of Christian Relief and Development Association (CCRDA), member of Union of Ethiopian Women’s Charitable Associations (UEWCA), member of Network of Ethiopia Women Association, (NEWA), and Member of Strategic Initiative for women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), among others.

NMHDO’s Major program component includes:
Promotion of economic empowerment of women through saving and credit based innovative income generating activities (IGA).
Empowerment of orphan, vulnerable children and disadvantaged girls through integrated interventions that include access for education and health care services, strengthening economic opportunities and psychosocial care.
Raising and strengthening awareness on HIV /AIDS prevention and control, Sexual and Reproductive health (SRH), maternal health, family planning and other related health issues
Increasing farm income both in urban and rural areas through agriculture based livelihood diversification and value chain development
Economic Empowerment and livelihood
Working on economic empowerment of women and improving their livelihood is the core focus of NMHDO. With its various intervention projects it strives to address various issues that has left women to be dependent and forced them to face inequality of many forms. Among these issues are poverty and gender discrimination. These issues has resulted in women having a meager income by involving in insecure and low wage jobs or have no income at all. Therefore with a belief that women can make immeasurable contribution in their family and community if given the opportunity and the resource, NMHDO works in empowering them. The activities include provision of skill training, providing business start up capitals and creating awareness in the larger community. Not only that NMHDO also supports women through agriculture based livelihood diversification involving the production of high value corps, small scale irrigation and practice of improved agronomic practices
To create a society where there are many entrepreneurs and business owners teaching students to be confident or providing them with the information and skill to be so is very important. Having these in mind NMHDO together with its donor organization works on Information and communication technologies (ICT). The organization uses ICT as an instrument to enable women and girls to decide on socio economic issues that affect their life directly or indirectly and lead a better and informed life. The mechanism also enables women and girls to improve their self confidence, to aspire a better future and have better educational achievements in their academic work.
To bring these results NMHDO trains high school girls on Internet application and usage. It also trains teachers’ to upgrade their teaching skills and use gender sensitive methodologies in their day to day work. In addition, NMHDO strengths the capacity of ICT center of targeted schools as well as initiate peer education mechanisms among the students.See more
