Organization for Youth Empowerment (OYE)

The Organization for Youth Empowerment, known simply as OYE in Honduras, was founded in 2005 by Ana Luisa Ahern, Justin Eldridge-Otero and Jesse Mockrin, inspired by a vision of a society where youth have a powerful voice and the knowledge and resources inspire positive change in their lives and their communities. After various years of volunteering during their adolescent years with young people in El Progreso, specifically the children of the Copprome orphanage, Ana Luisa and Justin, of Washington, D.C., witnessed the challenges facing young people in Honduras. Based on this understanding and their desire to make a difference, they returned to Honduras in their early 20s, joined by fellow D.C. native Jesse, to start a scholarship program to help five young women go to college. Recognizing that access to formal education was just the beginning, they designed an integral program to engage young people outside the classroom, providing opportunities for young people to develop leadership and life skills and creating spaces for them to engage with each other and their communities through the arts and sports.
