Oxfam is an International confederation of 20 affiliates working together with partners and local communities in more than 90 countries around the globe. They work to find practical, innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty and thrive. They save lives and help rebuild livelihoods when crisis strikes and we campaign so that the voices of the poor influence the local and global decisions that affect them.
They understand that many causes of poverty are linked, and they use many tactics to fight poverty and inequality. From local communities to the global stage, they call for fairness and justice.
They have six goals that support our shared vision of a just world without poverty:
Oxfam in Uganda
Oxfam started working in Uganda in the 1960s. Since then, they have implemented both development and humanitarian programmes to support practical and innovative ways for people to lift themselves out of poverty.
They work with poor communities, local organisations, volunteers and supporters to bring change. They believe that fundamental change will happen in Uganda with a shift in policies and practices, and when citizens, particularly women and youth, are able to exercise and claim their rights and responsibilities as enshrined in the Constitution and hold duty bearers to account.
They work to address some of the key issues that keep people in poverty, including extreme inequality, poor governance and corruption, climate change, human-caused and natural disasters, gender-based violence, lack of access to resources and incomes, especially for the vulnerable groups like women, youth and pastoralists.
Strategic priorities
Oxfam’s global strategic goals include contributing to achieving more profound and lasting change in the lives of people living with poverty and injustice. They’re creating a world-wide influencing network in order to unite the power of local organizations, who share a common vision for change. Adequately resourced, local organizations are best-positioned to influence and actively participate in the fight against the injustice of poverty.
In line with this, Oxfam in Uganda is bringing together the joint skillsets of its staff and partners (humanitarian, long-term development, and advocacy) in order to achieve change at the national level. They do this by building networks, platforms and coalitions with like-minded civil society actors who campaign with them and lobby duty-bearers to bring about change. Oxfam in Uganda also supports and engages in Oxfam’s global campaigns, guaranteeing that Uganda is present on the world’s most pressing issues. In Uganda, Oxfam:
Builds active citizenship around tax and budget allocations, extractive industries and women’s leadership.
They address land and seed rights for women and pastoralists. They work with the private sector on issues like climate change, youth employment, and unpaid care work for women.
They strengthen local humanitarian capacity as well as respond directly to humanitarian crises.
All their work has a deliberate focus on the protection and promotion of women's rights, and they campaign to end all violence against women and girls.
