Partners in Hope (PIH) is a Malawian non-profit organization focused on strengthening the country's healthcare infrastructure through the development of a high-quality Medical Center, and providing assistance and training to 5 mission hospitals and over 40 health centers throughout Malawi. With a special focus on HIV/AIDS, PIH is improving physical infrastructures, laboratory capacity, referral mechanisms and the clinical skills of health workers.
Founded in 2001, PIH has become one of the most dynamic healthcare organizations in the country, offering a 'holistic approach' to HIV/AIDS. A variety of services are readily available on site, including:

- Community-based support groups and home care
What We Do
Partners in Hope aims to have a holistic approach to HIV/AIDS in the Malawian context. HIV Prevention has been a core value from our inception, but the need to care for the many people who are already infected has driven us to do all that we can to make a difference. Recognizing that our impact is limited if we only focus on our facility and our city, PIH partnered with UCLA to expand our impact by building the capacity of existing organizations throughout Malawi. Using PIH and our many partner hospitals and clinics, we now have a valuable network which can conduct practical, grassroots research to help us all do our work better.
- HIV Prevention
- AIDS Treatment
- Operation of Clinics - HIV/AIDS treatment is a critical priority of Partners in Hope. Through care given in our Moyo Clinic, Dalitso Clinic, and Thandizo Ward, we strive to provide our patients with the best care, always.
- Community Outreach - Tigwirane Manja (meaning "let's hold hands" in Chichewa) - the name of this program reflects the desire to build strong relationships with our HIV/AIDS patients while they are at the Partners in Hope Medical Center (PIH), and after they have been discharged to their homes into three nearby communities. With a focus on drug adherence counseling, addressing psychosocial needs and encouraging community involvement, the Tigwirane Manja team follows up on patients who have been cared for in the Moyo Clinic, Dalitso Clinic or Thandizo Ward at PIH. During home visits, they check to see if patients are receiving the support they need to keep their viral loads low and lead healthy lives.
- Mentoring and Training - EQUIP Malawi is a USAID funded project committed to improving the care given in rural hospitals, training and mentoring clinicians and nurses in HIV/AIDS care and conducting practical operational research. EQUIP was the primary partner of the Ministry of Health program for retraining hundreds of health care workers in the updated AIDS treatment protocol in 2011.
- Tuberculosis Diagnosis - The Partners in Hope Medical Center (PIH) is registered as an official tuberculosis (Tb) site with the National Tb Control Program.
- Research
- UCLA Resident Rotation - UCLA Program in Global Health has been a key partner for Partners in Hope. In addition to supporting laboratory, research and training, senior UCLA residents do a one-month rotation at the PIH Moyo Clinic. They bring energy and new information to our staff here, while gaining exposure to clinical experiences they could never get in the U.S.
