SMEC has operated in the Philippines since 1974. SMEC's first project in the Philippines was the Australian Aid funded Zamboanga del Sur Development Project in Mindanao. This project took an integrated approach to rural development and included rehabilitation of roads, bridges, water supply and wastewater services. SMEC opened a permanent office in Manila in 1993.
Since then, SMEC has been involved in development projects such as improvement works for the North Luzon Expressway, carried out feasibility studies and preliminary engineering for hydropower projects, water supply, sewage treatment and solid waste management projects, implemented a rate rebasing project for the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, conducted environmental permitting assessments and monitoring works for private firms, and undertaken regional technical assistance projects such as the Efficiency and Connectivity Strengthening in Archipelagic Southeast Asia. SMEC has experience in the Transport, Water, Hydropower and Energy and Social Development sectors in Philippines.
SMEC has recently been awarded the feasibility study and preliminary engineering design services contract for the Bubunawan Mini-Hydropower Project in Mindanao. SMEC is also providing detailed engineering design services for the Irisan Mini-Hydropower Project in Baguio for the Hedcor Group.
