Support to Life (STL)
Support to Life (STL) is a humanitarian aid agency founded with the principal objective of working with communities to help them meet their basic needs and rights.
Emergency relief aid is provided impartially in response to humanitarian crises with a focus on laying the foundations for rehabilitation, reconstruction and participatory development. Disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction are important components of STL's mission.
Sema Genel Karaosmanoğlu, one of the founding members of STL and current Director, has brought her in-depth knowledge and extensive experience in relief aid, recovery and development work in Belgium, Turkey, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iran.
STL is prepared to undertake emergency response and action not just in Turkey, but the neighboring areas of the Middle East, Caucasus, Balkans, Western Asia, and Central Asia.
STL started with a recovery mission in Bam, Iran after the devastating earthquake in the historic city in 2003. Concentrating recovery efforts in social protection, capacity building and livelihood support, STL moved on to its second mission in the mountains of Kashmir of Pakistan after the earthquake in October 2005. Working with rural communities in Kashmir, STL provided humanitarian assistance in the areas of shelter, food, water and sanitation, emergency education, psychosocial care, infrastructure recovery, school reconstruction, and community-based disaster risk reduction, linking relief with development.
Equal rights and opportunities for all human beings. Promoting intercultural understanding and partnership to enable peace for all.
Humanitarian aid is provided according to need; therefore, there is no discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, religion or nationality.
No sides are taken in conflict, and no statements are made regarding political, ethnic, religious or ideological beliefs.
Interventions are based on own needs assessments. Prioritization of assistance is never based on political, economic or military interests.
STL is accountable to its stakeholders in projects including individuals, communities, partner organizations, and governments.
How they work:
Placing emphasis on community participation in the planning, implementation and evaluation of projects, STL works at the grassroots level to improve the quality of lives of those in need. From assessment to project implementation and evaluation, STL is sensitive to issues of gender, age, and diversity. In our relief programs, priority is given to the needs of less-advantaged populations, including refugees and IDPs (internally displaced populations).
All recovery projects are designed to promote civil society initiatives supporting grassroots action. STL is committed to ongoing partnership with local and international non-governmental and government agencies.
STL places special emphasis on accountability to all stakeholders, from beneficiaries to donor partners. Rigorous evaluation of projects helps STL in measuring the impacts of projects on the target group while building institutional and technical capacity. STL shares evaluation results, manuals, and research data with interested parties ranging from humanitarian assistance to international development.
Through own field missions linked to humanitarian crises, STL works primarily as an implementing partner for international NGOs. The STL team also undertakes consultancy work with international partners for emergency operations, program management, trainings and other capacity-building programs.See more
