Trade Justice Movement
About

The Trade Justice Movement is a UK coalition of nearly seventy civil society organisations, with millions of individual members, calling for trade rules that work for people and planet. Its members include trade unions, aid agencies, environment and human rights campaigns, Fair Trade organisations and consumer groups. Together it is calling for trade justice, not free trade, with the rules weighted to ensure sustainable outcomes for ordinary people and the environment. Trade Justice Movement believes that everyone has the right to feed their families, make a decent living and protect their environment. But the rich and powerful are pursuing trade policies that put profits before the needs of people and planet.

To end poverty and protect the environment, it needs trade justice, not free trade.

It is calling for the UK government to:

-Ensure that trade rules allow governments, particularly in poor countries, can choose the best solutions to end poverty and protect the environment;
-Ensure that trade rules do not allow big business to profit at the expense of people and the environment.
-Ensure that decisions about trade rules are made in a way that is fully transparent and democratic.

By working together on trade through the Trade Justice Movement, organisations hope to have a much bigger impact than they could working in isolation. Formed at the end of 2000, the goal of the Trade Justice Movement is fundamental change to the unjust rules and institutions governing international trade so that trade is made to work for all.

A list of current members is available here. All coalition members support the policy positions outlined in the founding statement ‘For Whose Benefit?’ It welcomes organisations as new members.
