The Universidad de Oriente "UNIVO" was founded on the initiative of a group of visionary businessmen from the city of San Miguel, on October 30, 1981, as an alternative for higher education for the community of the eastern part of the country; beginning his academic work on February 3, 1982, with a population of 554 students. It was born as a corporation of public utility, of a secular nature, nonprofit.
Its main activity is educational services at a higher level and is governed by the Higher Education Law, its Regulations and other related laws; not being able to intervene in religious or political activities of any nature. Its basic functions are: Teaching, Research and Social Projection.

To train responsible, competent and committed professionals with the common good of the present and future generations of the Eastern Region of El Salvador, with attitudes and aptitudes to insert productively into the national and international market.
