The University of Cape Verde (Uni-CV) is a higher education institution in Cape Verde. It is the only public institution with the character of university in the country, being therefore reference for the Cape Verdean superior education.
It has five organic units, with its reitoria installed in the city Beach.
The Cape Verdean higher education base began its journey in 1979, with the Teacher Training School, forming teachers to teach in secondary education. However, the institutionalization, which allowed the creation of the Uni-CV, came with the establishment of three public institutions dedicated to higher education in the country, namely:
The Higher Education Institute (ISE), created by Decree-Law no. 54/95, of October 2, 1995;
The Instituto Superior de Engenharia e Ciências do Mar (ISECMAR), created by Decree-Law no. 40/96, of October 21, 1996;
The National Institute of Administration and Management (INAG), created by Resolution nº 24/98 (of 1998), obeying Decree-Law 40/96 of October 21, 1996.
On November 20, 2006, the Council of Ministers created, through Decree-Law 53/2006, the University of Cape Verde, first integrating ISE, located in Praia, and ISECMAR, located in Mindelo. In 2007, a third school officially joined the university: the National Institute of Agrarian Research and Development (INIDA), located in São Jorge dos Órgãos. In the first years of existence, the Uni-CV counted on the strong support of Brazilian universities in teacher training and the exchange of administrative experiences.
The institutions remained units associated to the Uni-CV, with a specific juridical design in the first two years of operation of the university. Therefore, through Decree-Law no. 29/2008 of 9 October, ISE, ISECMAR and INAG were extinguished, and its structure was fully integrated into the Uni-CV.
On January 31, 2014 Uni-CV went through an unprecedented process, with the first free and direct election of its Rector. In this election was chosen, with 50.9% of the votes, the professor doctor Judite Nascimento as new rector of the university, taking office on February 24 of the same year.
