Research and Development

They use practical, collaborative research methods to uncover new stories and data that demonstrate the tangible social and economic benefits of promoting gender inclusion. They do this across sectors, with special emphasis on value chains and the small and medium enterprise ecosystem.

Some examples of their work:

  • United Nations - "Principles for Responsible Investment (UNPRI) - How stock exchanges can advance gender equality".
    This research project demonstrates how global stock exchanges can focus on gender in capital markets. Download the summary or the full report in English.

  • Banorte and the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE) Creating Opportunities: Strengthening the Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Ecosystem for Women Entrepreneurs in Mexico.
    This participatory study reveals opportunities for investing in women-led small and growing businesses in Mexico. It profiles women entrepreneurs and provides an understanding of their needs for financial and non-financial support. Download the full report in Spanish or in English.   • El Buen Socio and the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE)
    Catalyst Fund Grant
    "Financial Inclusion of Rural Women Entrepreneurs in Mexico".
    This project seeks to demonstrate a pathway for financial inclusion of rural women entrepreneurs to banks and investors by examining the impact of an alternative risk-assessment tool.

  • ING Bank, the Aspen Network of Development Entrepreneurs (ANDE), and the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women Beyond the Threshold: Investing in Women-led Small and Growing Business.

Capacity Building

They combine diverse training methods and deep cultural insights to deliver tailored training programmes that address social and cultural barriers to achieving gender inclusion.

Some examples of their work:

  • Shell Foundation - "Practical tools for gender inclusion in SMEs".
    This widely- disseminated training is used with micro entrepreneurs worldwide and includes business skill, leadership and gender training for semi-literate populations.

  • UN Foundation Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves Gender Capacity Building for Clean Energy Enterprises.
    This project includes design of a gendered due diligence process for selection of investees, a gendered value chain analysis, and a training on gendered business operations and human resources.

  • World Vision Australia
    Market Opportunity Identification with a Gender and Disability Focus.
    This market opportunity analysis designs income generating opportunities for women and persons with disabilities in Sri Lanka.

  • Oxfam
    Gender training methodologies
    This ongoing project includes the development of several training methodologies and approaches for supporting women entrepreneurs, including a toolkit for engaging men, and a training programme on women’s economic leadership.

Tool & Programme Design

They design and deploy proven tools, from assessments to impact studies to benchmark systems, to help partners unlock access to the long-term financial and social returns that a balanced approach to gender brings.

    Targeting small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the clean energy sector in East Arica and India, this toolkit guides businesses on how to make changes in their operations to impact women.

  • Walmart Foundation, USA Strategies for Gender Inclusion in Agriculture Value Chains in Mexico
    This project researches women’s roles in agriculture businesses and value chains, and provides benchmarks for gender performance.

  • Capplus Exchange Gender in Commercial Banks
    Tailored to the specific needs of commercial banks, this tool focuses on understanding how to tap into the market of women entrepreneurs.

  • Root Capital
    Gender Capacity Building for Agricultural Enterprises
    This toolkit assesses gender inclusion in agriculture enterprises and helps businesses see the benefits of women´s participation and inclusion.
