WASDA was established as an NGO in 1995 by a group of professionals and entrepreneurs from Wajir South to supplement the efforts of government and other stakeholders in addressing development challenges in the region. The main focus then was education. However, over time WASDA has grown in its services and scope and in addition to education, is currently addressing a number of issues related to animal health, human health, water resources and peace not only in Wajir District but also in most parts of Northern Kenya and neighboring Somalia.
The 2011-2015 Strategic Plan builds on WASDA’s achievements over the past 15 years of work in addressing the needs of pastoralist communities. The development of the Strategic Plan was informed by a thorough assessment and analysis of our history and growth over time, the changing operating environment and the evolving needs of our communities. In this Strategic Plan we have prioritized livelihoods, water resources development and management, education and public health services for the communities in the HoA. The process involved a participatory engagement of various stakeholders in a series of analyses and discussions.
