Dr. Leopoldo Villegas is an international strategist with broad programmatic, technical and management experience in international development, humanitarian and public health programs in both the public and private sectors. Dr. Villegas has 22 years of experience leading key aspects of implementation, research, evaluation and translational medicine worldwide. Dr. Villegas has proven skills in planning and implementation; public policy development and advocacy; program management (including design, implementation and evaluation); and analytical assessments to define management approaches to improve effectiveness and efficiency in service delivery.

Dr. Villegas is a world expert on infectious and neglected diseases, maternal, newborn and child health and health system strengthening. He provides technical assistance to countries in the development of their strategic plans, and impact assessments for control and elimination of endemic diseases. He has been providing technical advice to Ministries of Health in Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Suriname, DR Congo, Nigeria and countries in the Mekong region on malaria control and elimination of endemic diseases. Additionally, Dr. Villegas has working experience with WHO, Wellcome Trust, CDC Foundation, World Bank, USAID, FHA, national health programs in several countries and the academia in Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas.

Dr. Villegas has a MD from the Central University of Venezuela, a Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene from the Royal College of Physicians in the United Kingdom (UK), a Master of Science in Tropical Medicine and a Doctorate of Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine in UK. He also completed an Advance Diploma in Public Health Management from the Central University of Venezuela.
