Mark Borg is a Programme Management Consultant with experience in all levels of project development and implementation. Until April 2020, he was the Team Leader Programme Management of the Pacific Islands Development Forum. Previously he was the Strategic Partnership, Membership and Project Development Advisor for IUCN Oceania Regional Office (ORO) based in Suva, Fiji Islands. Mark is a national of both Malta and Fiji and has studied Education, Environment Education, Political Studies, and Governance. Mark has 20 years of experience having worked in many countries including Malta, South Africa, Mongolia, Fiji and a number of Pacific Island Countries. Mark is a founding member of the Maltese Green Party and served as the Party’s Environment Spokesperson for many years until he moved to Fiji in 1995. In Fiji Mark worked as Information and Communications Officer on a UNDP Pacific regional project, later joined UNDP’s multi-country office focusing on the development of information and communication technology (ICT) in the Pacific. He then joined UNDP’s Pacific SURF. In 2001 he became a free-lance consultant in Governance and ICT development. He assisted in the 2001 and 2006 elections in Fiji and contributed towards the setting up of the media centre for the 2007 elections in Papua New Guinea. In 2003 he served in Mongolia as the International Advisor of the International Conference of New or Restored Democracies (ICNRD), and was responsible for the drafting and negotiation of the Ulaanbaatar Declaration and Plan of Action. In 2005 he worked in South Africa on an EU Project aimed at strengthening local government in Mpumalanga and Limpopo. In 2006 he joined USP as a Fellow in E-Governance. Mark Borg joined the Fiji National Initiative on Civic Education as Project Manager from 2007 to 2010. As a free-lance consultant, Mark worked for UNICEF, UNFPA, UNOCHA, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, the BRIDGE Project, PIANGO, WAC, WWF and IUCN. Mark’s interests in the conservation sector include biodiversity conservation, climate change issues and environmental governance.
