The International Monetary Fund is recognizing and is ready to deal with the new administration of Honduran President Porfirio Lobo, a spokesman for the agency told Reuters March 5. The announcement came a day after the U.S. called on countries in Latin America to normalize relations with Honduras, which was shunned by the international community following last year’s coup that ousted President Manuel Zelaya.
IMF spokesman Andreas Adriano said the lender will send a team to Honduras to perform an economic assessment. He clarified that the Honduran government has yet to request IMF for financial aid.
