In an appeal to donors and the general public, the office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees said an additional $147 million is required to address the needs of a growing number of refugees fleeing from two conflict-torn Sudanese states.
UNCHR spokesperson Adrian Edwards said the refugees are moving from South Kordofan and Blue Nile to South Sudan and Ethiopia at a pace the agency did not anticipate when it planned for the $269 million 2012 budget.
The additional funds will be used to provide basic supplies to 185,000 refugees. UNCHR will also harness the funds to improve roads used by the refugees, build and service additional settlements, and to pre-position food and other supplies ahead of the rainy season, which starts in April.
The general public can donate directly to UNCHR programs for Sudanese refugees through the agency’s website.
