Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and supports the implementation of UNEP, UN-Habitat and the Resident Coordination System globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services.

This internship is based in the Facilities Management and Transport Section (FMTS) under Central Support Services in the Division of Administrative Services (DAS) at UNON. The intern will report directly to the Associate Logistics Officer, FMTS (A-J Project – New Build and FWS). Daily responsibilities will depend on the intern’s background and the assigned office.

Under supervision, the intern will support the A-J Project team with the following tasks:

  • Assist with design drawings, sketches and basic project tasks.
  • Discuss project requirements with the team.
  • Organize and manage project files and materials.
  • Visit worksites to monitor progress and implementation.
  • Prepare contracts, reports, CAD drawings and technical diagrams.
  • Generate design development ideas and concepts.
  • Research building codes, standards and compliance requirements.
  • Develop 3D conceptual designs.
  • Prepare design mock-ups and color boards.
  • Research building materials, lighting fixtures and other construction products.
  • Order product samples and carry out basic project calculations.
  • Conduct research and support drawing revisions for the project team.
  • Attend project and staff coordination meetings.
  • Perform administrative duties and analytical support tasks.

Qualifications / Special Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or another related field.
  • Applicants must meet one of the following:
    • Be enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s, PhD or equivalent).
    • Be in the final academic year of a Bachelor’s degree programme.
    • Have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree.
  • Experience in standard computer software applications is required.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated interest in the work of the United Nations and commitment to its values.
  • Prior professional experience is not required for UN internships, but the field of study must be relevant.

Languages

  • English and French are the working languages of the UN Secretariat.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
