Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This internship is based in Beirut, Lebanon, and the intern will report to the Regional Coordinator for Chemicals and Pollution Action.

Under the direct supervision of the Regional Coordinator, the intern will:

  • Carry out research, analysis, and drafting of documents presenting data and information gathered from diverse sources to support project and activity implementation.
  • Support research on national-level environmental activities in West Asia and produce reports, country data fact sheets, and concept notes.
  • Support the preparation of briefings, informational materials, and presentations.
  • Support the organization of project-related events and stakeholder consultations, including drafting minutes of meetings.
  • Draft and review reports and other documentation under the guidance and supervision of the Programme Management Officer.
  • Assist the Programme Management Officer in following up with partners on the implementation of project activities.
  • Format project reports received from partners in standard formats.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications / Special Skills
Applicants must meet one of the following academic criteria:

  • Enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, business or public administration, social science, environmental law, or a related field.

Additional requirements:

  • No professional work experience is required; however, the field of study must be closely related to the internship.
  • Applicants must be in their final year of a Bachelor’s programme or enrolled in/completed a Master’s or PhD programme.
  • Proof of enrollment or completion must be attached and an official certificate will be required at a later stage.
  • Good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.

Languages

  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations.
  • Travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of the intern or their sponsoring institution.
  • Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the duty station country may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization.
  • Successful candidates must confirm visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
