Duties and Responsibilities

Organizational Setting & Reporting

  • UN-Habitat promotes socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities and serves as the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system.
  • Builds inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination, and poverty.
  • Montreal Office links research, policy, and action to advance sustainable urban development globally.
  • Activates a network of partners to scale urban sustainability solutions aligned with the UN-Habitat Strategic Plan.
  • Focus areas include housing, land use, basic service provision, climate action, biodiversity, urban resilience, equity, and justice.
  • Engages with Canadian and North American subnational governments, grassroots organizations, practitioners, private sector, and other constituencies.
  • Establishes a hub for urban sustainability science, data, innovation, and solutions.
  • Communications Intern supports visibility, digital engagement, and amplification of the office’s work.

Content Creation & Communication

  • Create multimedia content such as social media graphics, videos, and infographics to support program messaging.
  • Assist in developing and disseminating promotional materials and communication toolkits.
  • Support planning, coordination, and implementation of communication and outreach activities.
  • Draft and edit bilingual content for digital and print platforms (e.g., website stories, newsletters, reports, flyers).
  • Create visuals for public events, campaigns, and global observances.

Digital Presence & Knowledge Management

  • Assist with managing and scheduling social media content across UN-Habitat platforms.
  • Conduct research and propose social media content aligned with urban development themes and UN campaigns.
  • Support efforts to expand reach and engagement through strategic content creation.
  • Document and archive communication assets, media coverage, and outreach materials.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal knowledge platforms and databases.
  • Monitor and report on communications metrics (e.g., social media analytics, website performance).

Event Support & Other Duties

  • Assist in event planning, content preparation, and communication coverage for key events, webinars, conferences, and campaigns.
  • Provide real-time communication support during live or virtual events.
  • Attend and summarize key meetings or conferences.
  • Support internal team tasks or special projects related to communications and outreach.
  • Conduct background research on urban sustainability, housing, land use, and climate action.

Qualifications/Special Skills

  • Must meet one of the following:
    • Enrolled in a graduate school program (Master’s or equivalent or higher).
    • Enrolled in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s or equivalent).
    • Graduated with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, or equivalent.
  • Computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Demonstrated interest in UN work and commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • Ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Preferred areas of study: Communications, Public Relations, Administration, Marketing, or related fields (Master’s or PhD candidate preferable).
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro) and Canva.
  • Experience communicating issues related to sustainable urban development (housing, mobility, urban design, governance, etc.) is desirable.

Languages

  • Fluency in English (oral and written) required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.

  • Interns are not financially remunerated; travel, visa, accommodation, and living costs are the responsibility of the intern or sponsoring institution.
  • Non-citizens/permanent residents may require appropriate visas or work authorization.
  • Interns should verify visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
